From The Bastrop Daily Enterprise:

Local high school students have been purchasing doctor’s excuses and using them to skip school.

The VPSO has announced that an Evans woman has been arrested for selling doctor’s notes to local high school students.

Belinda Gail Fondren, 52, was charged with filing or maintaining false public records on Oct 23.

The VPSO received a complaint from a local physician who stated that he had been receiving calls from the Vernon Parish School Board in reference to several absentee medical excuses that had been submitted by several students at local high schools.

The physician indicated that he had never treated any of the students, nor did his office authorize or issue the excuses. It was revealed during the course of the investigation that Fondren was a former employee at the physician’s medical clinic, and was allegedly selling these excuses to students who would skip school without being penalized for days missed.

The VPSO discovered 14 excuses were issued by Fondren. Students that were interviewed by the VPSO indicated that Fondren had allegedly been selling the excuses for $20 each. Her bond was set at $15,000 and she was booked into the VPSO Jail.

If convicted, Fondren could face a maximum of five years in prison at hard labor.
