Prostate
Cancer Foundation Home Run Challenge

This year 186,000 men will be
diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Team up with
Major League Baseball to find a cure. Pledge any amount to the
Prostate Cancer Foundations Home Run Challenge by calling
1-800-798-CURE.
PROSTATE
CANCER FOUNDATION FAST FACTS:
Prostate cancer is the most common
non-skin cancer in America.
Prostate cancer strikes 1 in 6 Men
In 2008, more than 186,000
new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States
over and 28,660
men will
die from it.
After lung cancer, prostate cancer is the
leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the U.S.
A nonsmoking man is more likely to get
prostate cancer than lung, bronchus, colon, rectal, bladder,
lymphoma, melanoma, oral and kidney cancers combined.
African-American men are 65%
more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than Caucasian-
Americans and are more than twice as likely to die from it. The
reasons for this disparity are not yet known.
It is estimated that there are
over 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer.
Early prostate cancer usually
has no symptoms and is most commonly detected through prostate
cancer screening tests such as the PSA blood test and digital rectal
exam.
Prostate cancer can be
eliminated from the body by surgery or radiation if diagnosed at
an early stage.
However, every year, 70,000 men
require additional treatment due to a recurrence of prostate cancer.
Because prostate cancer is a
relatively slow-growing cancer, the 5-year survival rate for
prostate cancer diagnosed at all stages is 98%. The relative
10-year survival rate is 84% and the 15-year survival rate is 56%.
The only well-established risk
factors for prostate cancer are age, ethnicity and family history of
the disease; however, high dietary fat intake may also be a
significant risk factor. A recent study shows that the risk of dying
from prostate cancer increases with body weight.
Founded
in 1993, the PCF has raised more than $320 million and provided
funding to more than 1,400 researchers at nearly 150 institutions
worldwide.
The
PCF has been a pioneer in the grant making process, simplifying
paperwork for grantees, leaving more time for researchers to conduct
needed scientific research. The PCF also advocates for greater
awareness of prostate cancer and more governmental resources,
resulting in a 20-fold increase in government funding for prostate
cancer. |

Ronald
McDonald House
The idea behind Ronald
McDonald House is simple: provide a "home-away-from-home"
for families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment
at nearby hospitals.
Some children have
to travel great distances to get the medial attention they
need. In-hospital treatment may last one day, one year or even
longer. For the families of these children, accommodations can
be hard to come by; options are often limited to costly hotels or
unforgiving hospital chairs and benches.
The Ronald McDonald
House provides a comfortable, supportive alternative for these
families. It serves as a temporary residence near the medical
facility where family members can sleep, eat, relax and find support
from other families in similar situations. |
