On Sunday, July 31, 2022, Kyle Jonson, the son of Nichelle Nichols, released a statement on both Uhura.com and Nichelle Nichols’ official Facebook page that his mother had passed away of natural causes. She was 89 years old.

Nichelle Nichols was best known for her barrier-breaking role as Communications Chief Uhura on the Star Trek television series and subsequent movies. Not only did she have a position of authority which, as a Black woman, was nearly unheard of at the time, but she shared one of the first interracial kisses on television with her co-star, William Shatner.

After her stint with Star Trek ended, Nichelle Nichols was tapped by NASA to help diversify their space program, and had a hand in recruiting astronauts such as Sally Ride, Judith Resnik, and Guion Bluford.

Social media is awash with condolences, remembrance, and well wishes for the late Nichelle Nichols, her fiends, and her family. It’s obvious the effect that such an amazing woman had on a generation.
